My New York Diary Blog - #DayThree

On Saturday morning we woke up bright and early but absolutely HANGING after our 3.30AM naked, drunken vlogging nightmare. We quickly ordered room service, assuming a good cup of English Breakfast tea and an All American Breakfast (like full English breakfast... but not as...well, English) would do the trick but we were too tender to tuck in, so we perched on our chairs gingerly nibbling at our toast and hash browns. I even completely left my much needed cup of tea!!

Lindsay called us saying she would pick us up at the hotel, which as I'm writing this from home now, I can tell you was the Marriott Marquis right in the heart of Times Square. She asked if we needed her to bring us anything from starbucks as she was dropping in for an iced coffee and we assured her we were fine and she came straight over.

We decided that some fresh air would do us good so we stepped out into Times Square and walked down to the largest store in the world – Macy's on West 34th Street. When I discovered that Macy's had a bridal department I asked Lindsay to set up an appointment right away. With the amazing exchange rate at the moment, if we bought a dress for around $3000 we would get it for around £1,500 – basically almost half price. Bargain. Plus the fact that Rose and I hadn't tried on any wedding dresses at all ever. So we thought, why not in New York? We considered also booking an appointment at Kleinfeld – but there was so much we wanted to cram into each day Rose and I decided to only go to one bridal shop.

We got into the shop and filled out some details like when is the wedding date and where would the dresses be shipped to if we bought them. Then we went, with our two assistants Ashley and Sable, to pick out dresses we like and try them on. My assistant Sable got me a strapless corset style bra to wear underneath whilst I was trying on the dresses and helped me into them.

The first dress I picked out was seriously sparkly. I saw it shimmering on a mannequin and HAD to try it on, firstly for the shape, because I wanted to try on different styles and this one was a proper PRINCESS dress, with a sweetheart neckline, cinched in corseted waist and a huge meringue style dress. To top it off it was dripping with sparkles! I wasn't sure how much I would like it but when Sable slipped it over my head and started pulling in the waist I was like OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS. I didn't expect to love it so much I was just wanting to know what style and shape fit me best! Sable led me out onto the stage filled with mirrors so I could showcase the dress to Lindsay, and Kathleen who had just turned up to join us. Rose was still getting dressed as I stepped out and checked out the shape and back of the dress in the mirrors. It looked great, I was just so surprised at how much I really liked it. On the one hand I thought it was a little on the tacky side, covered in bling, but on the other hand I felt it really suited my personality. Sable was telling me how it was one day of your life to look totally special and exactly how I wanted.

(These are some dresses I tried on but not THE dress I bought!)

Rose came out and joined me wearing a tight lacy number with a mermaid style bottom. It was ok but not THE one. I thought it looked nice but not good ENOUGH and she felt the same. Went went and tried on dress number 2.

My second dress I tried on was a strapless white dress with a meringue style dress with silver detail at the bottom of the dress. I tried that on and didn't like it at all. I didn't like the detail at the bottom, it didn't compliment my shape, I just didn't like it. Rose came out in another fitted lacy dress which was better than the first one, but we all agreed it wasn't as good as it could be.

THEN finally, I tried on my third dress. Sable slipped it over my head and tightened the waist. It was a lot floatier than any of the other dresses I'd tried on, which were quite stiff and heavy. The skirt was made of many layers of this floaty mesh, it felt like clouds, it was so soft and light and it floated really perfectly with a small train. It also had a sweetheart neckline as we had decided that was flattering to my figure. I walked out onto the stage and Lindsay and Kath were telling me they'd liked the first one but they thought they liked this one best. I was surprised at how much I liked it, and I told them I thought I liked this one best too. Lindsay was taking photos of me so I would be able to look back and decide which looks best. Then, Rose stepped out wearing THE one. It was fitted to her body, but came out slightly just past her hips, but clung to her small waist. It had thick lacy straps but although they were thick, the whole thing still looked delicate, not dumpy. The neckline was a V neck so it flattered her boobs and her small top frame. The dress was covered in lace roses, which was perfect. Ashley, Rose's bridal assistant went and got her a special veil that goes with the dress. The veil had lace pattern on and went all the way down to the floor and even longer. The point was the veil fell over the train of the dress and the pattern of the veil with the silk train shining through looked incredible. When Ashley put her veil on, and handed Rose a bouquet the room went silent. Rose had literally took everyone's breath away. The ivory lace against her pale white skin and her dark hair made her look so classic and beautiful. The bouquet Ashley had handed to Rose was deep red Roses and I was thinking YES this works so well, we HAVE to be holding red roses at our wedding. Everything about the dress worked for Rose, the colour of the dress against her pink blush and paleness, it just looked like it was MADE for her, and with roses on too, perfect. She looked so so beautiful, I honestly have never seen her looking THAT beautiful before. I could feel myself welling up and I really didn't want to cry in front of everyone, but staring at her in her dress, there was literally no stopping me and I burst into tears.

Lindsay being a natural organizer, she cannot HELP but organize people around her. I remember in the back ground I could hear her saying to the assistants “Can we get some tissues please? Can somebody hand her a tissue” and another lady handed me a box of tissues, and I took one. Everyone was murmuring about how beautiful she looked and how perfect it was and I was just staring at her. Rose had been looking at her reflection but she turned to me and looked me in the eye and said “I love it” and I told her I loved it too, that it was perfect, that it was the one. I turned around, we were both stood on this stage wearing our dresses and I'm not kidding, ALL the people that worked at the bridal store had come in. This other assistant who had really long brunette hair down to her waist said in her American accents “You girls both look GORGEOUS and oh, please stay here all day with those beautiful accents PLEASE.” She came over to me and was telling me my dress looked great. Then Sable came out of the back with the same dress I was wearing, but in Ivory. I had been wearing it in white. She said, “Let's try this on in Ivory” and lead me out the back. She was so brilliant, I knew she really liked the one I was wearing, but at that point I was in white and Rose was in Ivory so it didn't compliment each other. We looked like two different brides for two different weddings. She helped pull it over my head and tied up the waist, which had a tie up corset style back, and led me out to the stage where Rose was still standing with Lindsay and Kathleen taking pictures and telling her she had to get it.

I came and stood by Rose and she turned to me and said “Rosie you have to buy that dress. Rosie its perfect on you.” When we stood together, both in Ivory, it looked like our wedding. The assistants put us in heels, gave us veils and handed us bouquets and Lindsay took photos of us from the front and back wearing our dresses and showed me. They went together SO well. Even though they were completely different they just made the other one look so good. I was so glad we tried them on together otherwise we may have ended up wearing exactly the same or in two totally different colours. Both of us want the whole wedding to be perfect, neither of us wanted to look better than the other. I was so happy we had Lindsay and Kathleen to help us too. We were stood together having photos taken and one of the assistants said “So.... is it a yes to the dress?” and Rose and I both said, YES we will take them, of course! Rose would have to have a lot of tailoring done to hers, mine was slightly simpler, Sable took my measurements and I went and got changed. As well as the dresses, we also bought the veils. I said to Rose “Next we need to get Bridesmaid dresses!”

Rose and I didn't have enough money on us to hand, so we sorted out all the details of shipping, measurements and filling out forms and we told everyone we would come back later to pay and seal the deal. It was so funny, I'd felt so rough in the morning after Coyote Ugly but when trying on dresses, I felt perfect, it was like a dream. I'd felt so happy and dreamy. When we took the dresses off we remembered how hungover we were. Lindsay suggested what we were all thinking and said “Let's get something to eat.” There were a million different places we could have eaten at in New York, but we were suddenly so tired, we went down a couple of floors and sat down in the restaurant at Macy's.

We all ordered pizza and couldn't stop talking about the dresses, about how unbelievable it was that the ONE day we went to try on dresses, there was 20% off, and how we didn't think we'd find THE dresses. We were all so surprised at Rose, she was convinced she wouldn't find anything she liked and she loved trying on the dresses the most! We started talking about who is more girly in the relationship and how the wedding will be, then we ended up talking about Lindsay and Kath's relationships and gossiping about boys (and girls!) The pizzas arrived and we were all chewing on them, Lindsay and Kath had ordered seriously strong Bloody Mary's to try and cure the hangover. We all started talking about the night before in Coyote Ugly and all the things that had happened that had disappeared from my memory overnight! Apparently one of the barmaids at Coyote Ugly had been hitting on me so bad! And I had fallen over in the bar but had NO recollection of it. All the girls were telling me how I fell 'gracefully' and it was an 'elegant fall trying to make me feel better, hahah!

The Bloody Mary wasn't working for Kath, who kept disappearing into the bathroom. She wasn't sick, I think she just felt so bad, so we all told her to go home. She was upset because she'd wanted to spend the day hanging out with us, but she just wasn't up to it, so we sent her home, with her pizza wrapped up in a doggy bag for when she felt better.

Lindsay and Rose and I had planned to go up the empire state building, so we left the remains of our pizzas and started walking.

Thank god we had organised Lindsay with us because we would have spent ages on our own searching for a place to by tickets. Lindsay picked out a man from the crowd with a ticket machine told us what to get – fast track so we could skip all the queues. We walked through the doors and headed up the escalators and kept climbing. We were given a headset to listen to the audio about the building, but we were too caught up with gossiping with each other. We took a lift, then another lift and arrived out on the top. We stepped out into fresh air, which was absolutely perfect weather to be on top of the empire state building – super sunny but with a cool breeze. We walked over to the edge, holding on to the rails and looking out over at New Jersey. It took my breath away and I remember thinking to myself oh no – i'm going to cry again – but I didn't (just.) Until this trip I thought I was a tough cookie but it turns out I'm an emotional wreck and I cry at everything... but I'm fine with it.

Lindsay pointed out where we had driven to go to the store, and what bridges we were looking at. We had paid for Lindsay's ticket because she'd been up the Empire State Building before, and we didn't want her to pay to come on all these attractions that she'd already seen. But I was watching her and I could tell she was really enjoying herself. She said “This is so cool, I haven't been up here since I was 8.” It was the quietest I'd seen us all, we just walked around slowly, taking it all in. The city looked beautiful. Lindsay told us how the building with the H&M sign on it was the only building on the entire skyline to have advertising on it. She told us how some people thought it ruined the view and she didn't know how H&M of all buildings had been allowed to put their advertising up there. You would have thought perhaps an even BIGGER company would have done it, not H&M. Weird. It still looked beautiful though. We walked over to the other side and Lindsay pointed out Queens. I pointed at a pool on a roof saying how it was cool and Lindsay said “Oh yeah, we're going there later for my birthday. It's a rooftop bar” and Rose and I just looked at each other like, Wow.

We wandered around, taking photos. We took a photo for a couple who wanted us to take it for them. We walked past a couple of girls and Lindsay whispered in my ear that she heard them saying they knew who we were and that we were Rose and Rosie. But they didn't come up to us or anything, so we kept admiring the view. After a while, suddenly, I felt a wave of tiredness come over me. We'd only had around 3 hours sleep after all the dancing and partying the night before, we'd woken up so early, and the day had been so tiring. The dresses, the empire state building, it was overwhelming. Lindsay said she felt shattered and we all agreed. We decided to go down and get ready for the night.

We stepped out of the building and started planning what we were going to do. Rose and I were going to move some money around in our accounts and go back to buy the dresses. We'd go back to the hotel, grab something to eat, get ready then get a cab to Lindsay's apartment to begin meeting her friends and getting ready to go out for her birthday.

Rose and I hailed a cab (which I was surprisingly good at – so far, every time I'd hailed a cab they've driven straight over, Rose seemed to be invisible to taxi drivers.)

We got o the escalators to head up to the 8th floor of Macy's for a second time to get our dresses. The ladies were smiling and waving at us and saying hi. After we'd paid for our dresses, Sable came over and gave us her card and made us promise to email her the photos of our wedding and hugged us both so tight. Another thing I was glad about trying on dresses in New York is that everyone is really cool about gay people other there. Nobody stares or gives a damn. There are so many people in New York and I'm sure they've all got so many bigger things to worry about than other people being gay. I'm not sure we would have had such a warm, heartfelt reception at English bridal shops.

While we were paying there was a problem with one of our cards, because it was English, and Sable had told us we would have to call the bank, just to tell them no our card hasn't been stolen, we're just in New York spending a ridiculous amount haha. Rose panicked because the time difference meant the bank in England would be closed – she had a bit of a meltdown and snapped at me a bit. Rose and I make a great team because, when one of us panics, the other one works really hard to stay calm and cool the situation down. I joked that she was a bride-zilla and told her we would work it out. I was happy she loved the dress so much. She told me she wouldn't leave the shop without it – it's too perfect. We used another card and it was fine. I was happy she cared so much.

Then we walked back to our hotel and ordered room service. We were SO shattered but we wouldn't have missed Lindsay's birthday party for the world. We ate and changed. I wore a silky green playsuit with white caged heels, and Rose wore a white dress with a cutout waist with a black kimono and black heels. We went downstairs and the doorman of the hotel hailed our cab and put us in it and we headed over to Lindsay's.

I loved how Lindsay and all her friends were drinking out of those gigantic American red cups. She got us a whiskey and ginger beer and turned up the music, which was all Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift's Shake It Off. We met Lindsay's sister Stacey and her friend Lauren, and some more friends. We were chatting about celebrities we love, music, and hilarious youtube videos of people falling and fail vids. We all got in a pre-ordered giant cab and Lauren asked the driver if she could connect her phone to the taxi via bluetooth and control the music. He said yes and she connected, and was playing the hits! We were all dancing and laughing and Lindsay was texting more friends to come.

We pulled up outside the rooftop bar and there was a giant queue. It was weird being outside in a going out outfit without a jacket. The weather was perfect, even at night, to wear a little dress and not be cold. We headed up in a lift and hit the top floor. Lindsay grabbed us a table indoors and ordered the drinks. The waitress came over, holding up two giant sparklers in each hand, stomping in her giant heels and gave a sparkler to Lindsay and a sparkler to me and we played with them for a while. The waitress poured out all our drinks – Rose and I had vodka and orange juice- it was so strong! It was seriously posh up there – when Rose and I went to the bathroom the woman in there put soap on our hands for us and passed us our paper towels. We came back from the loo and Lindsay grabbed our hands and said “Come on let's go outside.” We walked out onto the rooftop, with the pool and loungers that I had spotted from the Empire State Building. I looked up and turned and there it was, the Empire State, looking back at us. It looked different at night, the top section lit up like a giant candle. I could see stars and the pool was lit up with lights, candles on tables and fairy lights. It looked beautiful and we took tonnes of photos. Everyone from the party filed out and we were all chatting, drinking and snapping pictures. Rose was smiling and squeezing my hand. It was perfect.

Sometime later, maybe about 1am, Rose and I were shattered. We told Lindsay we were heading off to sleep and she kissed our cheeks and thanked us for coming. We hailed a cab (me again!) and fell into bed in our hotel. Our bed felt like clouds and we drifted off as soon as our heads touched the pillow.

  19. This is the cutest! If I wasn't already dying to go to New York, I most definitely am now; It sounds incredible. I am so glad you and Rose are a British couple and have the recognition yous both deserve over in the U.S. You guys are by far the most genuine YouTubers I've watched.

The wedding dresses sound perfect! I was just drawing fashion illustrations last week of wedding dresses with you and Rose in mind. I sketched your dress as a bigger more princess dress with a low back, and Rose's as a long straight dress with crossed lace straps at the back.

I have managed to get my bestfriend totally addicted to yours and Rose's videos. We plan to spend the last week of holiday before Uni, binge watching your videos.. a week well spent if i don't say so myself.

Thank You for brilliant videos, tweets, pictures, blogs, and an insight to the love you and Rose have for eachother.

You are a very creative and talented writer. Every time I read a post, it takes me back to when I lived in Manhattan, or the experience I had when I found my wedding dress (which sounds very similar to Rose's). My wife and I haven't seen one another's dresses yet, but I can't wait to get the feeling you had when you saw your dream girl in her dream dress! Our wedding is in eight short days, so I won't have to wait much longer! Thank you for sharing these stories, and good luck with all of the wedding planning and excitement to come! 46. Hi !

Tonight I watched your live stream and I decided to visit your blog. I read this article and it was a pleasure to read it ! Your trip NY seemed very good.

Also, I have been watching your videos on youtube for a long time, even if I am french, each time I watch your video I am getting better and better in english ! AT least at understanding, talking english for real is an other kettle of fish (thanks wordreference for the expression haha)

Maybe I have a little advice for your blog, you should probably add a fav icon because the white B of blogger on orange background is quite agressive. Many times I lost eyesight because of that.

Can't wait to read all your next articles and videos !

PS : I have one question for you, where does your accent come from ?
